The Event
The inaugural Capel Makers Trail was held over 3 days.

The Trail was held throughout the Shire of Capel.
The venues included:

-
Capel RSL Hall
-

Home Studios and Maker Businesses
103 makers and artists from sculptors, metal workers, wood workers and felters to quilters, preservers, winemakers and potters participated in the Event.
It is estimated that “Trail Blazers”, i.e. visitors to the Trail, made approximately 3,085 visits to Community Centres, home studios and businesses over the 3 days resulting in 18,510 visits with makers.
Feedback from makers and visitors was overwhelmingly positive, reflecting pure enjoyment of a Community Event with a desire to contribute or attend again next year.
Highlights:
Interaction with the makers was the highlight for most visitors.
The breadth of community involvement which represented a mix of individual makers, community groups and maker businesses.
A wide and unique range of products and experiences.
A very high standard of products achieved by all Makers that was consistent across the Trail.
A friendly welcoming atmosphere with a sense of community was created across the Trail.
One Maker's Trail Story
Michael Gill
Potter - Boyanup
1927 - 2019
Michael contacted the Trail in 2018 wanting to know how he could participate. What was unique about Michael was that he was not only a maker but a collector. Over his long life of potting he had collected extensively; his own work and the works of well-known Australian potters (who were his peers) as well as pottery from all over the world.
He carried a legacy, an enormous history of stories and people that needed to be captured. The Trail cultivated this connection in a way that respected and honoured his life story and his craft assisting him to participate fully in the Trail. He opened his home studio for the 3 days. Friday brought only 1 visitor, but this person stayed for 4 hours and made Michael’s day. On Saturday 12 visitors arrived and Sunday brought 50!! He managed with a roster of friends and volunteers who stayed with him so he could get the most out of the experience.
Sadly Michael passed away in 2019. His participation in the next Trail will be sadly missed.
