The Event

From the 'Virtual' Trail in 2020, this year's Capel Makers Trail stepped back into reality and was held over 3 days. Friday May 21, Saturday May 22 and Sunday May 23, 2021

The 2021 Capel Makers Trail venues included:

  • Capel Community Centre

  • Capel RSL Hall

  • Peppermint Grove Beach Community Centre

  • Dalyellup Community Centre

  • The South West Rail & Heritage Centre

  • Boyanup and Districts Farmers Market

  • Home Studios and Maker Businesses

Over 118 artists, makers and producers from sculptors, metal and woodworkers, to quilters, winemakers, knitters and potters participated in the Trail.

It is estimated that visitors to the Trail (affectionately known as 'Trail Blazers') made well over 4,000 visits to the Community Centres, home studios, and maker businesses over the three days.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with everyone delighted the event returned to the real world. Responses reflected pure enjoyment of a Community Event after the uncertainties and restrictions of the preceding twelve months.

This Event also incorporated First Nation activities with a Welcome to Country by Wadandi Custodian Shannon Clohessy, indigenous artist Amanda Bell displaying her work at the Capel Community Centre, and the Wadan Warangkiny (Ocean Singing) Choir performing at Peppermint Grove Beach Community Centre.

Makers and visitors alike expressed intentions to contribute or attend again in 2022, indicating the 2021 Capel Makers Trail was a truly successful Event.

Highlights:

A fun and welcoming atmoshere, enhancing wellbeing, promoting participation and connecting the community.

Community involvement was again impressive,  represented by individual makers, community groups and maker businesses.

Visitors loved the level of creativity and became inspired to make and create themselves.

A very high standard of products achieved by all Makers that was consistent across the Trail.

Makers thoroughly enjoyed the interactions they had with visitors.

There were also interstate visitors to the Trail, widening the scope of exposure for local Makers.

Visitors were able to successfully participate in multiple days and plan their own Trail using our Trail Brochure.

A range of supporting events such as workshops for Makers.

One Maker's Trail Story

2021 Capel Makers Trail Event

Peter Evans

Scrubby Swain Artisan

Burekup

‘Scrubby Swain’ was a last-minute participant at the Capel Community Centre. He first contacted the Trail regarding one of our supporting events i.e. ‘The customer Experience and Telling your Story in business Workshops’. He was keen to attend, to learn how to capture and communicate his story with the intention of improving his business.

He was aware of the Capel Makers Trail, but not registering as he was ‘over’ the market stall experience and was from outside of the Shire. Scrubby, was a man of few words but with a personal invitation to participate in the Trail, he then went onto write and share his story.

The Trail was a great success for him personally and as a Maker. It was just the ‘kick along’ that he needed to stay enthusiastic and continue with his passion.

Financially he made good sales over the 3 days. The number of visitors was above Scrubby’s expectations. Meeting with visitors, having hundreds wander by his stall, created ongoing interest in his work and since the event he has taken orders and made numerous sales. While participating he befriended many of the other makers which he believes will benefit future ventures.

“I met people I have never met, and would not have met without this event, very inspiring!”
